When we find something we’re good at, we stick with it. It’s human nature. Still, no matter how good we are at something, there comes a point when we — particularly photographers– stop and ask ourselves, “What’s next?”. So, if you’ve recently found yourself asking that very question regarding your photography, we have some photography ideas for you.
Photography Ideas to Try
Nature
May seem cliche, and possibly even amateur, but one thing is for certain — there is nothing more colorful, exciting, and refreshing than stepping outside and capturing a photo of the world around you. Sure, the ‘nature’ around you may not be the most exciting, but as with everything else in life, it’s about perspective; how you choose to see things.
There is nothing that will get your wheels spinning quite like taking a walk and capturing photos of a flower, insect, or bird you’ve not noticed before. Once you step outside with your camera, it’s game on. Not to mention, nature makes us happy.
People
You see them every day. That is unless you’re an introvert who works from home and decides how often you cross paths with others. Still, regardless of how often you see people, how often do actually see them?
Photography, when done with practice and intention, has the ability to capture the depths of a person’s soul; the essence that makes someone unique in a world full of living, breathing beings.
Your Community
Have you noticed how interesting downtown streets appear when visiting a new city? Believe it or not, the locals to that community have likely grown so accustomed to seeing those same streets day after day, month after month, year after year, that they find them as unappealing as you find your city’s streets.
All of that to say this: Don’t let the familiarity of your city be the reason you don’t notice the beauty within it. Become a tourist within your own city. You’re guaranteed to stumble upon things you never even know existed and will be so happy you did.
Coffee
Are you even a photographer if you don’t take shots of your morning cup of coffee?Just kidding. Sort of.
While we’ve all grown accustomed to seeing way too many coffee shots every. single. day., there’s something warm and calming about those fancy cups of coffee with art designs swirled through the foam of your cup of coffee from your highly-talented barista. And, while not everyone strives to be Jeff Newton, there is something to be said for a person who puts effort into photographing coffee in new and creative ways.
So, channel your inner Newton *ahem, ‘creative’* and find a way to elevate that coffee photo to a whole other level.
Abstracts
When was the last time you intentionally set out to locate an abstract subject to photograph? During Week 2 of our PhotoHere Challenge, we asked photographers to explore Abstract Photography. Needless to say, we received some incredible photo submissions.
Photographing outside of our comfort levels — that is, photographing subjects other than buildings, family and friends, babies, and pets– is not something most people find themselves doing on a whim. In fact, it isn’t something we generally consider doing ever. And that is why it’s exactly what you should be doing if you’re in search of photography ideas.
Here’s to playing with new photography ideas and getting outside of your comfort zone. If you haven’t already, join our group of photographers on Facebook and be sure to sign up for weekly PhotoHere Challenge!
